The time: late evening, April 14, 1912. The place: somewhere in the cold, dark waters of the North Atlantic. The world's largest ocean-going vessel and pride of the White Star Line, TITANIC, was on a maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. She was 882 feet long and displaced 66,000 tons when loaded. Designed to withstand the flooding of any two of her compartments between bulkheads, the TITANIC was flaunted as unsinkable. The sea was calm as the great ship steamed ahead at 22 knots. Suddenly a shadow rose from the water ahead. The bow of the mighty TITANIC crashed into an iceberg, tearing a 300-foot gash beneath the waterline of the starboard side. The damage immediately flooded the first six compartments between bulkheads. At 2:18 a.m., April 15, 1912, after extreme confusion, commotion and hurried dispatch of distress signals, the TITANIC sank to her doom in one of the world's most epic disasters.
